18-year-old Prateek Surisetti selected for the unique educational experience.
Exploring the Antarctic Peninsula is a dream that the lucky few get to experience. And it becomes particularly special when you are the only one representing your country for an expedition to Antarctica. For 18-year-old Prateek Surisetti, it was a dream come true when he was selected for a unique educational expedition to Antarctica by the international organisation ‘Students on Ice’.
The ship-based expedition, involving more than 70 students from across the world, will commence on December 27 and end on January 10. The group will also include an international team of staff, consisting 20 scientists, historians, artists, explorers, authors, educators, leaders, innovators and polar experts.
Prateek was selected from a competitive applicant pool on the basis of his interests in safeguarding the environment. He was one of the finalists for the ‘Cutty Sark Young Travel Photographer of the Year’ and his book ‘Good Morning, Mr. Hobby’ will be released soon.
His expedition was financially supported by Advait B.V, Tech Mahindra, National Centre for Antarctic and Oceanic Research and Phoenix IT Solutions.
While on the expedition, participants will encounter wildlife, visit scientific research stations, learn about the history of the region and the effects of climate change on Antarctic and global ecosystems, consider scientific and other knowledge system perspectives and participate in interdisciplinary and hands-on educational activities.
‘Students on Ice’ (SOI) is an award-winning organisation offering unique educational expeditions to the Antarctic and the Arctic. Their goal is to provide students with a transformative experience at the ends of the Earth and, in doing so, foster a new understanding and respect for the planet. SOI brings together students with world class scientists, elders, artists, explorers, CEOs, innovators and polar experts to tackle the most important social and environmental challenges facing the planet.
