Students at their innovative best


It was innovations galore at the national-level working model contest ‘TECHMEET-2K13’, held recently at Chadalawada Ramanamma Engineering College (CREC), as nearly 500 engineering students from various colleges across the country presented solutions to several issues through the working models.

‘Automatic coconut plucking machine’, ‘Special Robo’, ‘Handloom weavers’ friend’ and other models developed by the students were aimed at making the daily chores easier. Vice-Chancellor of Delhi Technological University P.B. Sharma appreciated the students and opined that development of the nation was possible only through science and engineering.

Prof. Sharma urged students to inculcate discipline and ethics in them to excel in their career. He later unveiled a statue of Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya on the college premises .

 

 

IGNOU entrance on February 23


The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) will conduct an entrance examination on February 23 all over the country for admission into the Diploma and MBA programmes for July 2014 cycle.

Admission into PG Diploma in Management in financial management, operations management, marketing management, and Human Resources Manager will be made through the entrance – OPENMAT-XXXV, a press release said.

Some of the centres for Andhra University School of Distance Education’s II year B.A., B.Sc. and B.Com. examinations, scheduled to commence on Wednesday have been changed, according to a press release from AU SDE Director N.L. Narasimha Rao on Tuesday.

The following are the centres opted by the students and the centre at which they have to appear for the examination: Dr. V.S. Krishna Govt. College, Visakhapatnam for B.A. and B.Com. examinations – AU SDE, AU campus; Ideal College, Kakinada for B.A. examinations – M.S.N. College, Kakinada; Ideal College for B.Com. examinations – Chaitanya Degree College, Kakinada, and Government Junior College, Pithapuram for B.A. and B.Com. examinations – Govt. Degree College, Pithapuram.

students of PVP Siddhartha Institute of Technology, V.R. Siddhartha College of Engineering, and MIC College of Technology participated in large numbers with a number of science projects and exhibits to display the latest findings and their applications in the day-to-day life situations at the Gora Science Centre on Friday. About 450 students from various colleges and schools vied with each other to show what kind of scientific temperament they had. The explosive nature of several materials, the use of Integrated Circuits in controlling train movement at crossings and their applications in agriculture fields to start or stop irrigation motors, were some of the exhibits that attracted everyone.

Black Dress competition

Students of Maris Stella College in Vijayawada participated in several competitions in the run-up to the Fete Day organised on Sunday. While some of the students dressed themselves in Indian traditional attires representing cultures of several States in the country, there were colour wear competitions like White Dress and Black Dress competitions in which they had come attired in traditional Indian sarees and also western wear. The culmination of all these competitions was the Fete Day at which festive atmosphere prevailed with students enjoying and competing in several cultural events, while putting up eatery stalls etc.

Surface Science and Nanotechnology

Principal Scientist of Hyderabad-based IICT K.S. Rama Rao explained recent trends in Surface and Nanotechnology, and went on to say that Nano science and recent applications in present society were useful to the human being. He said nano material behave differently compared to macro molecules. They show different properties. They have different applications at different sizes. They can be used in pharmacy, medical care – for cancer tumor identifications and in industry etc. B.S.L.V. Prasad Senior Scientist from National Chemical Laboratories ACSIR Institute also gave live examples from the nature that some insects and bats that they cling to roofs and different colors shown by peacock and lotus leaf’s repellent properties were based on this.

 

MEPMA scholarship


Applications for scholarship under the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) were invited for 2013-14. The application forms can be obtained from offices of the municipal corporation, village panchayats, and MEPMA, and filled-in applications have to be submitted to the community organisers, CLRPs, and mission coordinators before Tuesday. Students of 9 th and 10 th classes and Intermediate (first or second year) are eligible to avail themselves of the scholarship.

 

 

 

 

National workshop on aeronautical materials and technologies


Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University G.S.N. Raju on Thursday released a brochure on a National workshop on aeronautical materials and technologies, to be conducted by the Department of Metallurgical Engineering of AU College of Engineering, in association with the local chapter of Indian Institute of Metals, on January 3 and 4, 2014, convenor and HoD Babu Rao Jinugu informed in a press release.

Last date for submitting applications for admission into various courses of Andhra University School of Distance Education, without fine has lapsed but applications, except for the B.Sc. course, will be accepted with a fine of Rs. 200 till December 31, AUSDE Director N.L. Workshop on e-content development


A training-cum-production workshop on ‘E-Content Development’ is underway at J M J College for Women here.

The workshop was designed to provide learning experience in pre-production, production and post-production activities of multimedia e-content development on different topics in different disciplines of higher education.

Principal, Sr. Rosalina said that in the digital era of ‘anytime anywhere learning’, training teachers for utilising the latest technologies for promoting learning was of utmost importance.

Correspondent, Sr. Stella Marris said that the college has collaborated with the Department of Educational Technology, Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu for this mission.

The Department of Educational Technology was the first department of Educational Technology, in the country and the first teacher education department to have been recognised by UGC for its Special Assistance Programme (SAP) under Departmental Research Support, Resource Person of this Capacity Building Workshop, S. K. Manoj Kumar of GIET College of Engineering has been selected for Inter-University Shuttle Badminton (Men) competitions. The selections were held at JNTUK on Tuesday and Inter-University competitions will be held in Manipal University, Karnataka from December 15.

Felicitating the winner in a function, Principal of GIET College of Engineering P. Ravi Kumar said sports and studies together develop activeness, discipline, and energy among students. He asked different corporate bodies to come forward in encouraging sportspersons. Later, he presented a memento to Manoj Kumar on the occasion. E. Philip Samuel, Physical Director, M. Rama Manikantha, HOD, Civil Engineering Department, Mr. Sharma, A.O. and other teaching and non-teaching staff of the college congratulated Manoj Kumar.

College wins laurels at ‘Yuvatharangam’


The Government Women’s Degree and Post Graduate College in Karimnagar town has won four first prizes in the “Yuvatharangam”, an initiative to create excellence in higher education, by the Commissioner of College Education recently in Hyderabad.

The College bagged the State best women empowerment cell in recognition of its activities for the welfare of women students.

The college also bagged first prize in kho-kho, first prize in highest marks in BA and History subject respectively. College principal P. Ramesh received the awards from Chief Secretary P.K. Mohanty, according to an official release here today.

District-level competitions for youth who qualified in the competitions held recently in the nine Assembly constituencies would be conducted at M.R. Government Music and Dance College on December 11 and 12. The competitions are in folk dance, folk songs, elocution, mimicry, traditional songs, fancy dress, etc.

Those selected in the competitions are eligible to participate in the state-level competitions, according to an official release.

Basaveswara Rao. He was addressing a seminar on opportunities for chemistry students at Kakaraparti Bhavanarayana College (KBN) on Saturday. He urged the students to keep their mind focus on research, especially in areas concerning pharmaceutical and agriculture. The Principal of the college P. Krishnamurthy, Governing body President U. Sambasiva Rao and Vice-Principal V. Narayana Rao were present.

The college also organised an awareness programme on HIV/AIDS in association with NSS and Red Ribbon Club on Saturday.

PROFESSOR TO DELIVER LECTURE IN SINGAPORE

 

MVR College of Engineering and Technology, Associate Professor PBVN Prasad will be delivering the keynote address at a two-day international conference on ‘Computer digital networks Asia’ at Marina Bay Sands in Singapore, schedule to commence on January 21, 2014. The conference will be attended by representatives from telecom majors such as AT&T, Vodafone and Internet Service Providers and DTH delegates from around the globe. Prof. Prasad was also one among the four invitees at the Alan Turing Centenary Function that was held at San Francisco in 2012.

COLLEGE SIGNS MOU WITH TECH FIRM

 

NRI Institute of Engineering and Technology has signed an academic alliance with Bangalore-based EMC2 for training students and faculty members of the college. According to the Chairman of the institute, the Bangalore-based firm will impart training in various aspects such as cloud computing, mobile technology and data storage.

SEMINAR ON NANO TECHNOLOGY

 

Potti Sriramulu Chalavadi Mallikharjuna Rao College of Engineering and Technology organised a one-day seminar on recent trends in surface science and nano technology on November 29, at the college premises. Professor K.J. Rama Rao from Indian Institute of Chemical Technology and B.L.S. Prasad from National Chemical Laboratory addressed the delegates.

 

 

 

New Registrar for OU


K. Pratap Reddy of the Department of Zoology, University College of Science, and Director, Directorate of Academic Audit, Osmania University, has been appointed Registrar of Osmania University. He replaces Prof. M.S.N. Reddy, who retired on Saturday.

Prof. Reddy holds a Ph.D from OU and specialises in neuroscience, fluoride toxicity and neurodegenerative diseases. He has guided 15 students for Ph.D and has done several projects including those from the UGC and the DBT. He also worked as Director of Admissions.

 

 

SDMSMK wins volleyball tourney


Sri Durga Malleswara Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala (SDMSMK) emerged the champion in the Krishna University inter-college girls’ volleyball tournament held on the college premises on Saturday. KBN College, Vijayawada, SDMSMK, ANR College, Gudivada, Maris Stella College, Vijayawada, Madonna College, Vijayawada and Nalanda College, Vijayawada participated in the tourney that was inaugurated by Dronacharya awardee Arekapudi Ramana Rao.
