A 70 Kilo watt peak (KWp) grid tied roof top solar power plant was inaugurated at the Sri Sai Baba National Degree College (SSBN) in Anantapur on Saturday.

Speaking after inaugurating the solar power plant, Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Council for Higher Education (APSCHE) Prof. L. Venugopal Reddy appreciated the effort of SSBN College and the Anantapur District National Education (ADNE) Trust, which runs it, for not only going in for a green solution for its energy needs.

The solar plant, which is producing 350 units of power a day, the college authorities said, had already exported more than 3500 units to the grid already under the newly introduced net metering system under which solar plant owners can export excess power generated, after meeting the needs of the college, to the grid and also get paid for the same.

Mr. Venugopal Reddy assured all help to the college in its endeavour to become an autonomous university under Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) although he averted that the Union Ministry for Human Resource Development is yet to address a few issues regarding the scheme, before it is implemented fully.

Vice-Chancellor of JNTU-A Prof. K. Lal Kishore congratulated the institution for going in for solar energy and stressed the need for research in the solar photo voltaic field to improve solar panel efficiencies.

K. Ramakrishna Reddy, Vice-Chancellor of Sri Krishnadevaraya University, said their university will also take a cue from the college and harness solar power. “I appeal to similar institutions to go in for solar power as it would go a long way in helping the nation become energy secure,” said P.L.N. Reddy, correspondent of the college. Principal of the college K. Nirmalamma, president of ADNE Trust P.V. Ramana Reddy, besides secretary of ANNE Trust Meda Subrahmanyam, also took part graced the occasion.

‘Best technology’

Meanwhile, the management of Kotak Urja Pvt Ltd., announced completion of the first grid tied roof top solar power plant on the ‘net metering’ system in Andhra Pradesh.

Speaking at a press meet held in Anantapur, Sunil K. Kotak, Executive Director of Kotak Urja Pvt Ltd., said that the 70 KWp roof top solar power plant installed in Sri Sai Baba National Degree and PG College at Anantapur, is the first system to be in the ‘net metering’ system on a low tension line in the State.

Saying that the quality of the solar system is on par with the very best in the world, customised to the needs of the institution, he added that the installed system is producing around 10 per cent higher than the committed power production. “Quality and commitment to the best of the practices is our pride and way of business,” he said even as he added that Kotak Urja Pvt Ltd guaranteed the production with a corporate guarantee, which he said showed the supreme confidence of the company in its product. He said the company is the only one in the country to manufacture ‘mission critical’ solar power products. “We are amongst the very few in the country who manufacture solar photo voltaic panels with an efficiency of 15 per cent or more,” he said.
