Aqua Devils river crossing event on January 26
Aqua Devils Welfare Association, an outfit that has been promoting swimming for 15 years, will stage its annual river crossing competitions on Republic Day (January 26) on river Krishna at 7 a.m., according to association president K.S. Ramachandra Rao here on Tuesday Around 250 swimmers of all age groups in two segments are expected to take part in the event, which will be flagged off from Durga Ghat by association life-president Gokaraju Ganga Raju and Andhra Cricket Association Director M.S.K. Prasad.
“The swimmers will cross a distance of 1.5 km by reaching Lotus Food city on the other side. “We have taken all precautions. We will press into service 15 boats with life-saving apparatus,” he added. He said that Krishna District Aquatics Association members would monitor the event and take care of the technical aspects to determine the winners based on timing. Mementos and certificates will be given away to the podium-finishers.
“We want to promote swimming among the general public as society is gradually getting into the vicious grip of obesity. Even young children are falling prey to obesity owing to sedentary lifestyle. Swimming, cycling and walking will keep people fit and healthy,” Mr. Rao pointed out. He said that the association recently staged a rally to promote cycling by pedalling to Hamsaladeevi. “On January 25, we will take out a rally from Seethanagaram to Amravarthi to bring swimming close to people”. Association secretary Ramakrishna said that apart from swimming, it was promoting volleyball and badminton on its premises. “We have 1450 members and we have spruced up several facilities to our members on the premises”. The river crossing event is such a popular one, even swimmers from other states and cities like Hyderabad would descend on the city to take part in the carnival.
