Entries invited for The Hindu Young Scientist Award
Winner will get a chance to visit NASA and runner-up will be sent to Malaysia on school exchange visit
The Hindu , in association with Space Kidz India and Hindustan University, is inviting entries from students of classes IX to XII of South Indian schools, for participation in the competition for ‘ The Hindu Young Scientist Award’ .
The award will be part of the ‘Young Scientist Programme’ designed to promote science awareness among students of middle and high schools.
Participation should be only through schools and one participant per school is permitted in each category. They will be encouraged to work on a science project, and make live models or presentations of the chosen topic. A CD or DVD containing three to eight minutes’ video of the completed project shot at the school’s science lab with the participant in full uniform, supported by e-copies of documentary evidence saved in the same CD or DVD, should be submitted for perusal by the panel of judges. Students can be enrolled on or before December 15 on the website ‘www.spacekidz.com’, while the project submission deadline is set as January 15. Results of the top 10 projects in each stream will be published on the websites of the Space Kidz India and The Hindu , and the schools will be duly intimated.
The winning students will have to bring their working models with all the written material, to the venue of final event to be held at Hindustan University Campus at Padur in Chennai on February 14 and 15 next year. All entries would be displayed at the venue on February 14, and the finals will be on February 15. A question and answer session with eminent professors will be held at the venue, and three students from each stream will be chosen to compete for the title.
A common topic will be given to each of them, with an hour’s time for preparation, after which the students will have to speak extempore for two minutes about the same with support from any models or charts assembled on the spot. One winner will be chosen and awarded the title of ‘ The Hindu Young Scientist 2014’ , after which he or she will fly for a camp at NASA with all expenses paid. A runner-up will be sent to Malaysia on school exchange visit. All the finalists will be awarded trophies, and all participants will receive certificates.
