Three-day AITA draws to a close
The three-day All India Tennis Association Talent Series Tourney for U-12 boys and girls drew to a close on Monday with encouraging signs of local girls coming of age in the sport.
The tourney was organised by Global Sports Foundation and the Guntur District Tennis Association.
In the finals played at NTR Municipal Tennis Stadium Complex, Sk. Mubashira Anjum beat Tabassum Afreen, both of them local talents trained by coaches here.
In the boy’s category, Hyderabad boy Iqbal Mohammad Khan, sailed to a comfortable win over G. Venkat Swamy Naidu.
Speaking at the valedictory meeting, Deputy Commissioner of Guntur Municipal Corporation Md. Latif said the GMC was committed to improve the infrastructure in sports stadiums.
The tennis courts have been re-laid using synthetic turf and the shuttle courts too have been freshly laid.
Plea to parents
He appealed to parents to bring their wards to the stadium and make use of the facilities. Complimenting the winners and runners-up, he said sport teaches everyone the values of life and asked the children to take win or loss in their stride.
Retired lecturer Vijay Kumar urged the children to inculcate discipline and follow court manners while playing. Habits like throwing the racket away, hurling the ball should be avoided at any cost, he said.
Veteran athlete and secretary of Guntur District Athletic Association G. Seshaiah and president of foundation G. Siva Prasad were also present.
