For those about to rock…
MUSIC Legends of classic rock Parikrama speak about their musical journey before their Vizag gig.
If you love classic rock and live music performances, chances are that, at some time over the past 22 years, you would have attended a Parikrama concert. The band has mesmerized fans with their music and energetic stage presence for over two decades. They are back in the city for the second time to play some of their original compositions as well as pay tribute so a few legends of rock. If you have never closed your eyes and lost yourself in guitarist Sonam Sherpa’s guitar solos or sung along with lead vocalist Nitin Malik, students who have studied in Delhi University or other premier engineering and medical colleges in the country will tell you that your college life is incomplete.
Parikrama started off in 1991 and have since become one of the country’s best known bands, not only opening for artists like Iron Maiden during their visit to India, but also playing at various venues abroad. Ahead of their concert we asked them a few questions about their journey so far.
Twenty two years is a long time for a band to stick together. What has changed in the music scene in the country and for the band in particular, over that period?
Well personally we are almost the same people, just that the hair is a little bit white. As for the rest, as musicians you always grow with time, so did we, that is natural.
The music scene has definitely changed for the better. Today you have brilliant bands all over and the average age of musicians to pick instruments has drastically decreased. This creates young wizards of music who now have many more avenues to play; and there is money as well.
You have been able to take your music to festivals across the world. How do you give your classic rock performances an Indian touch?
Well there is no special effort really for it. We had a tabla and violin in our lineup from almost the beginning and today you can say our music depicts 22 years of our journey and our growth as musicians. So it is basically rock n roll with shades of classic rock and heavy metal.
Hardly anyone buys music online in India; they just download it. Is this why you make your music available free online and don’t attempt to sell it?
We uploaded our first song when the music industry was at its peak. In terms of physical sales, our first song was launched in December 1995 from IIT Mumbai’s server. We bought parikrama.com in 1997 so you can say we knew ‘this’ was going to happen eventually so we always give out our music for free.
Do you feel the audience today is more open to attending a show with more originals and less covers?
Of course, that is the reason now we do almost all gigs as original gigs. Our parikrama@22 tour is called ‘originals and gods of classic rock’ so we will be doing maybe two-three covers of classics and almost about 10-12 originals.
Parikrama Inc has some of the best live artistes in the country signed. Do most of the bookings come from big cities or are tier -II cities also looking to book your artists?
All over! Aditi Singh Sharma just performed in Ludhiana, Jasleen Royal is playing Kanpur on the 17th and Parikrama did everything from Agartala to Raichuk last year. Advaita is already booked for Mesra, Noori will be playing in Kerala soon.
Anything special planned for the Vizag show? Have you ever performed on a beach?
We have played many gigs on the beach but we chose Vizag especially because we just loved the place the last time we came in for Rohit.
We surely will rock the house down, looking forward to it !!!
Parikrama will perform on November 16 at 8 p.m. on the beach at The Park Hotel.
