8,000 children join hands to protect environment this Diwali

ALLAHABAD: Around 8,000 children from various colleges and schools have joined hands to protect environment this Diwali. In fact, these children would be taking part in an environment protection rally to be taken out on Thursday to spread the message of celebrating pollution-free Diwali.

While citizens are detaching themselves from firecrackers, children studying in different city-based schools would be apprising everyone about the ill-effects of crackers. The NGOs and volunteers of civil defence have already started conducting awareness campaigns on the ill-effects of fire crackers, people this year appear more interested in celebrating Diwali according to the traditional ways along with paying attention to interior designing.

The current trend shows citizens inquiring about interior decorators and event managers for Diwali ideas this festive season. Volunteers are distributing pamphlets, holding seminars, conferences, and paintings competitions for school and college level students.

“Stress is being laid to create awareness about the ill effects of crackers on public and environmental health so that people opt for eco-friendly Diwali this year and always,” said a volunteer of civil defence. He added that only awareness can bring the desired result as there would surely be a decline in the sale of firecrackers up to 30% to 40%.

Many other groups are also working in rural and urban pockets against the use of firecrackers. As the focus shifts from bursting of firecrackers to aesthetic interiors, professionals are swamped with clients this year.

Surprisingly, clients are approaching furniture showrooms to bring home decorative items that would enhance the look of their houses. Rupali, who visited a renowned furniture shop in the city, said, “our family has decided to spend more on decorative articles including furniture and we have been looking out for latest and imported designs. The level of awareness against crackers has undoubtedly brought some good change and even children are not much interested in purchasing crackers worth thousands. Instead, they are asking for laptop or tablet.”

Soni, a housewife said, “children this time are not interested in fire crackers as they used to spent thousands earlier. My son has asked me to gift him science books and scientific toys instead of crackers.”

Environmentalists have appreciated the approach of residents and laid stress to increase the level of awareness in rural pockets too. A group of elderly citizens have joined the crusade and decided to apprise people of their respective locality about the ill effects of crackers on human health and animals alike.
