Nimble fingers at their creative best

Take a newspaper; fold the paper on the sides; stick them with the glue; secure the sides at the top with strips of cardboard; stick them together on either side of the paper; attach jute ropes; secure the ropes with a knot and the paper bag is ready.

With a few items – a full page newspaper, liquid glue, a scale, two strips of cardboard, jute ropes and a punching machine – nimble fingers of hearing impaired children of Omkar and Lion’s School for the Deaf and Dumb (target school) get busy crafting a paper bag in just 15 minutes.

Everyone concentrates on the job, stopping only to ask for stationery in sign language as Krishna Prakash, a Class IX student of Visakha Valley School, replied in sign language that he knows.

Innovative concept

Krishna Prakash’s innovative concept ‘The GReeN Lantern Project’ intends to reach out to deserving students and teach them survival skills using eco-friendly products. His theory of empowering education, equality through empathy and environmental enlightening has earned him an opportunity to compete in Horlicks Wizkids South-Asia Finals as one of the final contestants.

“There are a total of 150 participants from different regions for the selection round. Apart from the top two candidates from each region, 12 participants have been selected through online channel and I am one among them,” Krishna Prakash said. He is all excited to participate in the finals to be held in November.

The idea of paper bag making came into being when he saw the instructions at the showrooms saying ‘carry your own bags or pay Rs.3 extra per cover’. His parents – R. Prakash and Subadhra Prakash – support Krishna Prakash realising the dream. With dentistry as their background, they intend to reach out to the target school educating the student community on the importance of using non-fluoridated toothpaste. Reverse osmosis water purification unit will be donated to the target school in exchange for 800 paper bags made by the differently-abled children.

As part of the school curriculum, the training is also given to the students of Visakha Valley School from Class VI to X during socially useful productive work (SUPW) period, school principal P. Sharda Reddy added.
