Keep the EARTH in mind when you eat
first wars in the world were battles over food. One tribe or village fought with another over a dead animal or a group of fruit trees in the forest. Food or access to a source of food or water was seen as wealth.
Today there are seven billion people in the world. Already a billion of them are going to bed hungry. Can you imagine what that means? In 40 years time there will be another two billion people on the planet.
Whether you are rich or poor, living in a developed or underdeveloped part of the world, there may come a time when you will be fighting for food.
l Because we have already lost the best croplands to dams
l From land to the kitchen, some 40% of the food we consume is wasted
Environment writer Barry Lopez says, “Year by year the number of people with firsthand experience in the land dwindles. Rural poplulations continue to shift to the cities …in the wake of this loss of personal and local knowledge, the knowledge from which a real geography is derived, the knowledge on which a country must ultimately stand, has become something hard to define but I think it is unsettling”.
Land health is going to be a critical feature in our futures. Already things people thought would never happen have happened. Large-scale chopping of forests has led to whole mountainsides sliding over human beings and their settlements and roads. The Earth might well swallow us all up if we do not realize what we are doing
Peace on Earth depends on everyone eating enough. While there is starvation in many places there is feasting, excess and waste in others. This is injustice to both man and planet Earth.
